Craving Excessive Helpings?… Help Yourself Heal

I first learned about (and realised that I displayed symptoms of) Binge Eating Disorder on the Internet. Upon further research, I discovered that there is a wealth of information and support within the online community for people suffering with disordered eating. There are numerous forums and websites on the worldwide web, where one can obtain great advice while on the path to recovery.

Without the Internet, I would never have decided to try to tackle my own food demons. But, be warned that there is also a lot of misinformation floating around in cyberspace, so be sure to check that your sources are reputable before absorbing any “facts”.

After recognising telltale traits in myself, it wasn’t long before I began purchasing and reading self help books for Binge Eating Disorder.  I found these to be a very useful in understanding BED and eating disorders in general.

I would encourage anyone suffering with an eating disorder to do as much reading on the subject as possible. Self help books, and indeed the Internet, are both extremely useful in figuring out what causes us to restrict food, eat emotionally, or purge. They also provide invaluable tips and tools that one can use to overcome eating disorders and eating distress.

In my quest to become “normal” about food, I plan to read as many books as I can about emotional eating. I have already read Geneen Roth’s “How to Break Free from Emotional Eating” (twice) and am now in the process of reading “Crave” by Dr. Cynthia M. Bulik, Ph.D.

This literature has equipped me with the ability to recognise binge “triggers” and given me the necessary tools for overcoming distressed eating… Now, all I need to do is learn how to use these tools effectively in order to begin to heal.
